About Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture and dry needling are both needling procedures that use filament-thin needles inserted into specific areas of the body. But that is where the similarities end.

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that seeks to heal the body by balancing the body’s energy meridians to eliminate disease or pain. Needles are placed in specific areas to normalize the flow of energy – or chi – in different organs or systems. The procedure is thought to stimulate the central nervous system and trigger the body’s own healing mechanisms. Electroacupuncture is a modified form of acupuncture that delivers a mild electrical current during treatment, with the goal of intensifying its effects.

Dry needling is a procedure that targets myofascial trigger points — tiny knots of hyper contracted muscle fibers that cause pain and interfere with movement. Trigger points are often found in fascia, or in tendons near their insertion points on bones. Thin non-medicated needles are inserted into the trigger point, evoking a twitch response that causes the contracted fibers to relax. Ultrasound guided dry needling ensures that the needle hits its mark, especially in deep tissue trigger points that cannot be palpated through the skin.

When combined with alternative therapies and therapeutic technologies, acupuncture and dry needling can successfully restore functional pain-free movement in a broad range of conditions.

About Dr. Tatyana Kapustina, L.Ac. and Dr. Lev Kalika, DC

Tatyana Kapustina has been practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine and dry needling for over 20 years. She earned her Master’s Degree in Acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, located in New York City.

Dr. Kapustina learned to use ultrasound to guide needling procedures from Dr. Kalika. She performs sophisticated ultrasound guided dry needling to release trigger points and fascial adhesions, combining those procedures with other modalities, including high energy lasers, magnetic waves, EPAT and INDIBA.

Dr. Kapustina is an active member of the American Acupuncture Council and the Acupuncture Society of New York. She has continued her education over the years, furthering her understanding of musculoskeletal pain, stress management, insomnia, facial rejuvenation, and anti-aging.

Dr. Kalika has established himself as an innovator in rehabilitative medicine, embracing emergent technologies and alternative therapies that raise the bar on patient care. As an expert in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasonography, Dr. Kalika has published numerous scientific papers that contribute to the body of knowledge in his field.

Over the past decade, dry needling and acupuncture have been broadly accepted as alternative therapies that provide pain relief and healing without drugs or surgery. When guided by ultrasound imaging and combined with therapeutic technologies, acupuncture and dry needling are highly effective treatments for a broad range of conditions.

Why Choose Integrative Rehabilitation Group for Acupuncture and Dry Needling

There are numerous practitioners in Manhattan that offer dry needling and acupuncture services, but not all of them have the expertise or experience to accurately diagnose and treat a broad range of conditions.

At Integrative Rehabilitation Group, we use the highest-resolution diagnostic ultrasound to scan your body’s organs and structures, rendering crystal-clear images in real time, right in our office. With ultrasound, you become a participant in your healing journey as you provide feedback and reposition your body to visualize how your structures interact.

Ultrasound lets us scan structures like bones, muscles and nerves along their entire length, to identify issues that contribute to pain and dysfunction. On-site imaging means no waiting for lab results, and your treatment may begin on your very first visit.

Our personalized one-on-one approach means you receive a customized treatment plan based on your unique patient profile. Our holistic methodology goes beyond treating your symptoms, to get to the root cause of your condition and resolve it.

Our advanced technologies, innovative treatment methods, and 20-year track record of success makes Integrative Rehabilitation Group the clinic of choice for rehabilitative medicine in NYC

At Integrative Rehabilitation Group, we treat the whole patient, not just their symptoms. We understand that many conditions share the same symptoms, and making assumptions based on symptoms alone can lead to ineffective treatment that prolongs your pain while wasting time and money.

We base your diagnosis on health history, symptoms, clinical exam, assessment, and ultrasound imaging. Once we have a clear idea of what is going on, we are able to design a personalized treatment plan based on your unique diagnostic profile.

Therapeutic Technologies Enhance Acupuncture and Dry
Needling Outcomes

Your body has its own electromagnetic fields that keep things humming from day to day. For example, your heart produces an electric current that generates an electromagnetic field that runs throughout your body, impacting organs, bones, nerves and soft tissues. When structures are damaged, the electromagnetic field is disrupted, causing pain and dysfunction. Certain technologies can help to trigger a healing response that restores your body’s innate electromagnetic fields.

HIGH ENERGY INDUCTIVE THERAPY (HEIT)

High Energy Inductive
Therapy (HEIT)

HEIT uses electromagnetic fields to penetrate nerves, tissues, organs and bones, to reactivate their normal electrochemical function. When combined with electroacupuncture, HEIT has a profound anti-inflammatory effect on both acute and chronic inflammation. In addition, HEIT has a neuromodulating effect on nerve fibers, helping to normalize neural signaling between the brain and body.

Extracorporeal Magnetic
Transduction Therapy (EMTT)

EMTT transmits high-energy magnetic pulses to targeted tissues. The magnetic waves synchronize with the body’s own magnetic fields. EMTT combined with ultrasound guided dry needling promotes the proliferation of chondrocytes — responsible for producing articular cartilage — and accelerates cartilage healing.

INDIBA Radiofrequency Therapy

INDIBA therapy is a type of transfer of energy capacitive and resistive (TECAR) therapy that helps to restore the ionic charge of damaged tissues, for faster injury healing.

Actions of INDIBA include:

  • Addresses deep fascia in the region of the lungs, viscera and nerves.
  • Can release both deep and superficial muscular fascia.
  • Addresses organ fascia, which is often overlooked but can cause viscerosomatic dysfunction, where pain signals from an organ enter the spinal cord and trigger a reflex response in other structures.
  • Releases ligament tension and calms synovial fluid in joints.

When combined with dry needling, INDIBA helps to reduce hypertonicity of deep muscle tissue and fascia after trigger points have been released, preventing trigger points from returning.
